Itââ¬â¢s a Hit! One Momââ¬â¢s Quest to Make Reading Literature Fun
à When Danielleââ¬â¢s oldest son went off to college, she reflected on some of her regrets and decided to do something about them. Read her post and see how she created some fun social time along with learning literature for her daughter. Something had to change. My son had graduated from high school and was successfully handling his freshman year in college, but I still had some regrets. As an English/literature teacher, I hadnââ¬â¢t been able to maintain the momentum of reading and talking about great books with him throughout his senior year. Since my daughter was entering tenth grade, I determined to do something about this. After reading a friendââ¬â¢s post on Facebook that mentioned her book club, I was inspired and proposed a monthly teen book club to our homeschool group. Once I had the approval, I began the preparation and planning for the discussions. To prepare, I watched Teaching the Classics and completed all the exercises. I also read through the sections of Socratic-style questions at the back of the teacherââ¬â¢s guide. Through our local library I located online sources for author background information. Finally, I read through the first two novels and a short story collection over the summer so I could stay ahead of the students. Once I felt prepared with the material, I began to plan for the discussion time. Like most book clubs, I decided our group would meet once a month to discuss the book we had read the previous month. I chose to meet in the evening so that parents could attend if they wished. As I looked over the calendar, I left off meeting in December because the holidays are already so full. We simply picked a longer book that would stretch until January. After watching Teaching the Classics, I decided to pick a different area of literary analysis to be the theme that we would focus on each month, such as setting, characters, etc. Structuring it this way helped me to limit the number of questions I used during the discussion and provided a focus for the evening. Because I didnââ¬â¢t want to intimidate anyone at the onset, I didnââ¬â¢t assign a book before our first meeting. Instead, we listened to a short story by Mark Twain and then discussed it. I also used the time to cast a vision of what our group time would look like. For those who desired a high school English credit from this, I provided two writing assignments each month. Fearing that the participants initially might be reluctant to talk, I wrote each of their names on popsicle sticks that I could randomly draw upon if needed. This wasnââ¬â¢t necessary. We had a great response, and I often had to hold up my hand to stop the animated opinions that were bouncing around my living room! Like at any teen event, a bowl of chocolate and other snacks also helped the discussion along. With a little preparation and planning, the monthly book discussion became something we all happily anticipated. Most importantly, my daughter was getting her literature discussion with her friends. Our teen literary club was a hit, and I canââ¬â¢t wait for it to begin again next fall! Do you want to add more literature into your studentsââ¬â¢ lives? Maybe, like Danielle discovered, a book club is the perfect solution! Philosophy as a Tool to Analyze the World Essay Example
Essays on Philosophy as a Tool to Analyze the World Essay The paper "Philosophy as a Tool to Analyze the World" is an excellent example of an essay on philosophy.à I take the popularity of existentialism as a sign that many people were casting off or at least questioning the dominant values of culture and society. I disagree that we must conclude that there are no objective values although I do agree with Sartre that the responsibility for deciding or decoding those values lies with the individual and must be discovered through a subjective process. If Sartre is right the burden of ââ¬Å"creating our own essenceâ⬠falls upon us whether we like it or not and requires taking responsibility for all our decisions. The implications of each person taking responsibility and defining themselves could be both positive and negative. On positive people could not avail themselves to an outside ideology in order to justify their actions. Whether the result of an action is pleasant or unpleasant it falls to the individual to at least take moral p ossession of their own actions. On the negative, some people may choose actions that are unpleasant or harmful to others. I think it is a mistake to say that existentialism would free people in a moral sense any more than people who simply choose to do harm under other philosophies. People are still morally responsible for themselves, and it would not prevent society from providing disincentives to harmful actions.I donââ¬â¢t know whether there are objective standards, but I do think there are some basic tenants that when followed make society better. Things like one should not cause harm for no reason. My intuition is that moral statements like these are eternal, but to some extent, these must rely on ideas like reciprocity. Beliefs and knowledge are the tools, boundaries and set goals for us as we navigate the world. In the end, I think philosophy should be viewed as a tool to analyze the world. Regardless of what philosophy says, the method behind the conclusions can be useful even I disagree with the conclusion.
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Essay Thesis Example For Students
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Essay Thesis A hero is considered to be any man noted for courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who risks or sacrifices his life for others. In this novel Randall McMurphey is not crazy, nor may we conclude that he is the sanest of people, but as it appears he only acted as though he was mentally handicapped as an attempt to get out of the work farm he was placed in. The Psychiatric ward is his view of a ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬oefree ticketÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ãâà out of working and throughout the story he will soon come to the realization that this so called ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬oefree ticketÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ãâà may have a hefty price tag to it, as people in this ward are actually suffering from other means then physical hardship. McMurphey not only becomes a mentor as in being a main source for guidance, a leader demonstrating a forceful stand for oneÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs own thoughts, and a hero representative of all traits that a classical heroin would own, but also a safe haven for those patients in the ward that are too apprehensive to defend themselves. He then begins to help and understand the patients in a way only one who is truly devoted to understanding anotherÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs mental state with the assumption that they are truly sane could do. He helps his fellow patients in the ward realize that they should stand up for themselves and what they believe in, not to give in to such obedient acts that they have been forced to obey by. While McMurphey finds out that the majority of the inmates are not crazy at all just misunderstood and mistreated by society, he brings along with them a teaching that shows that there is nothing to fear in life but fear itself. As expressed throughout the narrative from Chief BromdenÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs point of view, from McMurphyÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs grand entrance, the relationship he builds with the other patients, his stand against Miss Ratchet, and the rebellious attitude he persuades on his new friends, he truly denotes his role as a hero in not only the eyes of patients at the ward but also the many people who have read this novel and interpreted it for what it truly is a tale of a heroin taking the stand against a high powering force. Chief Bromden also becomes an Icon in the ward because he learns that he to can be a hero and be bold in front of higher authorities. He stands up for himself by letting everyone know that he wasnÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMt deaf at all, but fooling everyone so he could be the eyes and ears of the institution. McMurphey rescues Chief Bromden from silence. McMurphey also saves a man in his thirties named Billy Bibbit who is still being controlled by his mother. McMurphey finds a way to bring out his manhood and obtain some courage. When Randall McMurphey first arrives at the ward all of the patients could see that he was different. He was a loud, obnoxious, boisterous man that was not at all obedient when it came to following the rules of the ward. One could tell that the patients enjoyed seeing him upset the staff and the Big nurse Ratched who made the patientÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs lives in the ward completely miserable. They enjoyed this behavior from McMurphey because they knew that they could never act out in such a way because they were too weak and feared what the consequences may be. The patients admired him right from the beginning. They can see that McMurphey is fearless and has the strength and courage to defend him self. RandallÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs strength embodies a heroic devotion to the other acutes of the ward. The patients seem to really enjoy Mcmurpheys company. He tries loosening them up by playing card games with them, teaching them the ropes of gambling, just simply having fun, while bringing the patients hope and joy in the depressing ward, which the big nurse absolutely forbids. McMurphey take on a fondness of these patients because he can see that they are all being mistreated simply for being misunderstood. He sees that they are fine men that just need a little guidance. .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .postImageUrl , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:hover , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:visited , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:active { border:0!important; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:active , .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842 .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5ba90ae24846625cf013c6a42c545842:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: General Prologue EssayThey soon look to Mcmurphey as a friend and trustee. He instructs the men that there is still hope for them to realize that they are not crazy and should not be residing at the ward. Once he finds out that the majority of his friends are living at the ward voluntarily he is shocked and poignant because it is clear that society has been convincing these men that they are nuts and do not fit in with the rest of civilization. One can tell that it hurts McMurphey to witness that these men have wasted there lives living there, not having a clue as to what is going on in the real world. Nurse Ratched has a lot to do with most of the men living in the psych ward voluntarily. She is a very vindictive person and McMurphey can see right through her. McMurphey did not understand his friends reasoningÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs for continuing to live at the ward but did understand the enemy who portrayed evil, spite, and hatred. Nurse Ratched made the patients in the ward feel awful. She makes them feel like they will never amount to anything in the real world. She mentally abuses them and McMurphey is the only one who can stand up against her oppressive supreme power. McMurpheyÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs struggle for his friendÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs free will is a disruption to the big nurseÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs social order. Though she holds down her guard she yet is incapable of controlling what McMurphey is controllable of, such as his friends well being. McMurphey is a democratic hero Baurect 280. The inmates begin to see that the ward is making their lives more miserable then before they had admitted themselves. They begin to go along side McMurphey and rebel against the ward. They realize that the ward, the staff, and especially the big nurse have been putting a thrashing on them and they are just about sick of it. The saddest part of this story is that Randall McMurphey not only becomes a hero, but a martyr, changing the lives of the inmates, and paying with his life for his individualism. He dies for his newfound friends. Although, there is a brighter side to this sad ending says R. L Sasoon. Sasoon writes, ÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬oethe uniqueness and value of Mcmurphey is his aliveness, his uninhibited responsiveness to things and to people which ultimately develops into responsibility for the other patients, such that he sacrifices himself so they, too, may choose to know the fullness of life, itÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs joys and itÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs painsÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ãâà 117. Ken Kesey, the author of this amazing novel had actually worked in a mental institution. He began to feel as if the patients werenÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMt really crazy after all, just more individualized than society was willing to accept. Parts of the novel were written while he was under the influence of LSD and peyote, which explains why Kesey had so many metaphors and unexplainable interpretations written in the novel. I thought that his writing was extremely good and well thought out. Working at the institution must have inspired him to write the book. One Flew Over the CuckooÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs Nest may have had more influence on society than society had on Kesey. Kesey was used to being looked down upon by society just like McMurphey and the other patients of the ward were. But that didnÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMt stop him from writing a masterpiece. Kesey was just as much of a hero as his characters were. He wrote the novel for people to understand that there is a hero in all of us, even loud, boisterous men with no regard for rules and regulations. I feel that McMurphey can be perceived as a modern day American hero because weak people need guidance and there are those strong individuals who can assist them in finding their way although they themselves need a little guidance as well. Modern society standardizes men and straightjacketÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs itÃÆ'à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬TMs misfits it causes the illness, which it quarantines. The spiritual residue opposes the machine culture but the West, as such, is doomed Fiedler. She stated that she would like to see topics on Indian leader, Apollo 17 moon landing, and events in South Africa. So we see that some individuals have interesting topics to talk about. Not many subjects are as exciting as topics that can have an impact on history. I am sure that if you go back in time, you could find a teacher that had something to say about the Vietnam War or the issue of the lack of freedoms that are present in America today. We know that more American troops are coming home than have been going in to fight. We have come to a point that if something does not agree with our culture, it can cause our society to face a lot of negative aspects. If something does not support our concept of equality, we will either ignore it or react angrily towards it. I wonder if there will be a next war?I feel that in order to survive as a country, we must maintain the right to freedom for all Americans. When we discriminate against others, we fail to understand that our society does not have a monopoly on goodness. We must always look for the good in others, to try to balance out any sort of negative issues that may arise. If we fail to do this then we run the risk of becoming like the others who do not value equal rights for their fellow citizens. We should always try to offer a wide variety of opportunities to everyone and that includes children in public and private school. We are going to live forever and when this happens, it is going to be great for future generations to see the different things that we did as a society. When a person was born into a different generation and sees a trend in society that was a decade or two ago, they will be impressed by our progress and think it is a wonderful time to be alive.Today, we are going to take a look at several essay topics from 1945-1975. These topics will look at the nature of education in our society. Hopefully by reading this article, you will be able to identify some topics on your own.
